Health Insurance Basics - Part II - Economize Wisely

Health savings account is not the last option on the list when it comes to paying for your own health insurance plan. But there are some restrictions you should know about. First of all, health savings account is not a variant for those who don't consider getting a high- deductible health insurance "out-of pocket "or paid by the employer. But it also should be mentioned that it doesn't mean every high-deductible plan can be associated with HSA.

What should you do?
  • You should know that the maximum health savings account contributions will equal to 2900 dollars for singles and 5800 dollars ( which is double that ) for families.
  • What is also great is that you don't lose a penny when you invest your money. If you had no chance to spend it this year – don't worry, you can do it next year as it will be transferred. You can keep your account when you change jobs.
  • You can keep contributing to this account up until you turn 65. When you do, your withdrawals are taxable and you can make them for any reason you'd like to find.
When you're hanging up there... When you are unstable with your job the worst thing you can possibly do is lose or make your insurance coverage lapse. Some USA states have a limitation of days that they let you stay without an insurance after you changed or lost your job. That is 63 days to be exact (of course, some states maybe grant additional days, some may give less amount of days). The Consolidated Omnibus Budget Reconciliation Act of 1985, also known as COBRA, gives you an opportunity to go no with the group coverage that you were insured under, for 18 months, but with the condition that you have to pay the premium entirely. You have to be aware of the rights you have access to under the state law or federal law.
  • COBRA will grant you more time to use the money you have contributed to your account.
  • When you are not working and living off your unemployment compensation money you can use your health savings account to pay COBRA or any other health insurance company's premiums.
  • If you not working or not attracted to a particular work-place, you can make withdrawals that will be toll-free.
When you are about to get a new job please make sure you know enough about the employer's health plan for the staff. The Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act states that you cannot be refused a coverage for a condition that already exists or have been a part of your life for more than a year or 18 months for late enrollees. This period will be replaced by the time you were insured without the gap of 63 days in your health insurance coverage.
